History

For over 60 years, the Petrich Family has owned and operated Petrich Marine Dock, located on the Thea Foss Waterway across from downtown Tacoma.

During its history, Western Boat Building Corporation launched scores of vessels during World War II and Tuna seiners that fished throughout the Pacific Ocean. Marine Iron Works built thousands of landing gears for the Boeing 737.

Today, the Dock, upland buildings and open space are available for your use.

Birth place of The Western Flyer, the "most famous fishing vessel ever to have sailed."

About Us

The Western Flyer

The Western Flyer was built in 1937 in Tacoma Washington as a state-of-the-art purse seiner to fish for sardines out of Monterey. The builder was Martin Petrich, Sr., owner of the Western Boat Building Company. The Western Flyer is most known for its use by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts in their 1940 expedition to the Gulf of California, the notes from which culminated in their 1941 book Sea of Cortez. Called the "most famous fishing vessel ever to have sailed," the 77-foot (23 m) Western Flyer is currently being restored in Port Townsend, WA.
